Dear Residents of Ramsay,

I'm writing in my role as VP External of the Ramsay Community Association.

As members of the Ramsay community, many of us are all too familiar with the ongoing challenges related to vehicle traffic and parking congestion on Scotsman’s Hill during major events such as Canada Day and the Calgary Stampede.

In light of continued safety concerns, restricted residential access, and overall disruption to daily life during these periods, we are working to compile formal documentation that can be presented to the City of Calgary and event organizers. Our goal is to advocate for meaningful changes—such as improved traffic controls, parking restrictions, and resident-only access—to be implemented ahead of next year’s events.

Earlier this year, I advocated on behalf of residents for permitted, resident-only access to the entire barricaded areaduring Stampede and Canada Day. Unfortunately, these requests were declined by the city due to a lack of documented negative effects of the current approach.

To strengthen our case moving forward, we are asking Ramsay residents to document and submit their experiences and concerns from this year's events. This may include:

  • Photos or videos of unsafe or illegal parking

  • Instances of blocked driveways or emergency access routes

  • Increased pedestrian or vehicle hazards

  • Noise, littering, or damage to private property

  • Personal stories of how your mobility, safety, or quality of life were affected

This is especially important in areas where "Permit Only" parking has been replaced with "2 Hour" parking in recent years, as these zones are now far more vulnerable to overflow event parking and non-resident vehicle traffic. This change has the potential to negatively impact the long-standing Ramsay School fundraiser on Scotsman’s Hill, which depends on controlled access and reliable parking enforcement to operate safely and successfully. When non-residents are allowed to park for free on residential streets, they are disincentivized to support the school parking fundraiser.

Please include dates, times, and specific locations when possible. Submissions will be compiled into a formal report to support our continued efforts for improved management and enforcement in 2026.

You may submit your documentation via email to vpexternal@ramsaycalgary.ca

We encourage all residents to participate. Our collective voice is the most effective tool we have in shaping the future of our neighborhood during these high-impact events.

Thank you for your support and engagement.

Sincerely,

Michael Garnett

VP External, Ramsay Community Association
